Next-Generation Intraoperative Support: The Surgical Gel Foam Pad Collection

In the modern operating theater, the stability and safety of a patient during prolonged procedures are paramount. Clinical complications such as Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPIs) and peripheral nerve damage often occur due to improper weight distribution during anesthesia. Our Surgical Gel Foam Pad collection represents an evolutionary leap in perioperative care. By combining the immediate pressure-neutralizing properties of viscoelastic polymer gel with the structural integrity of high-resiliency orthopedic foam, we provide a hybrid support system that outperforms traditional single-material positioners.

This dual-layer technology is engineered to manage the most challenging clinical scenarios. While the top gel layer mimics human adipose tissue to redistribute interface pressure, the high-density foam base prevents “bottoming out,” even during the most complex orthopedic or cardiovascular surgeries. Our collection ensures that every patient, from neonatal to bariatric, is cradled in an environment that maintains optimal capillary blood flow and anatomical alignment.

The Hybrid Advantage: Engineering the Dual-Layer Support System

The efficacy of our surgical gel foam pads is rooted in a multi-layered approach to biomechanics. By integrating two distinct materials, we address the primary mechanical stressors that lead to intraoperative tissue damage: Pressure, Shear, and Bottoming-Out.

1. Viscoelastic Gel Interface (Top Layer)

The superior layer consists of our proprietary medical-grade gel. This layer is designed to “flow” horizontally under the patient’s weight, conforming to the unique contours of the bony prominences—such as the sacrum, heels, and scapula. This redistribution ensures that interface pressures remain well below the critical 32mmHg threshold, where tissue hypoxia and cell death begin.

2. High-Density Orthopedic Foam (Base Layer)

Unlike pure gel pads which can be heavy and difficult to handle, or pure foam pads which compress too easily, our hybrid pads utilize a high-density, closed-cell foam base. This provides the necessary “push-back” support to maintain the patient’s surgical position while acting as a shock absorber against the rigid metal of the operating table.

3. Advanced Shear Force Mitigation

During patient repositioning or long-duration surgeries, “shear”—the pulling of skin against deep muscle tissue—is a major risk factor. Our pads are encapsulated in a low-friction, medical-grade polyurethane (PU) film. This allows the internal layers to absorb lateral movement, protecting the skin’s integrity and preventing the deep-tissue bruising that leads to post-surgical complications.

Specialized Solutions for Every Surgical Discipline

Our collection is categorized to provide targeted support across various medical fields:

  • Surgical Head & Neck Hybrid Positioners: Donut and horseshoe designs that combine a soft gel top with a firm foam base to ensure airway stability and prevent occipital pressure sores.

  • Full-Body Table Overlays: Sectional and continuous gel-foam pads that transform standard surgical tables into high-performance therapeutic surfaces for long-duration cases.

  • Specialized Prone Positioners: Chest rolls and Wilson frame pads designed to maintain spinal alignment and optimize respiratory excursion while protecting the torso.

  • Limb & Peripheral Nerve Protectors: Contoured armboard and leg pads that prevent ulnar and peroneal nerve damage during lateral or Lithotomy positioning.

Manufacturing Excellence: Safety, Hygiene, and Durability

As a leading manufacturer of clinical-grade polymers and technical foams, we adhere to the most stringent global safety standards.

  • 100% Latex-Free & Biocompatible: Our pads are hypoallergenic, odorless, and completely safe for use on patients with sensitive skin or chemical sensitivities.

  • X-Ray & C-Arm Radiolucent: Our gel-foam formulations are transparent to X-rays and C-arm fluoroscopy, allowing for clear imaging during intraoperative procedures without the need for patient repositioning.

  • Infection Control Integrity: The non-porous PU skin is impervious to blood, urine, and other bodily fluids. It is designed to be easily disinfected with 70% isopropyl alcohol or standard hospital-grade germicidal wipes.

  • Lightweight Durability: By utilizing a foam core, these pads are significantly lighter than solid gel alternatives, making them easier for nursing staff to handle and store without sacrificing clinical performance.

Yes. Our pads are non-conductive and act as a safe insulating barrier. They prevent the patient from coming into contact with the metal components of the operating table, which is a critical safety measure to prevent accidental grounding burns during electrosurgery.

The pads should be wiped down with a mild detergent and water, followed by a hospital-grade disinfectant wipe. Do not submerge the pads in liquid or place them in an autoclave, as extreme heat and moisture can damage the internal foam and gel structure.

We use high-resiliency (HR) orthopedic foam designed for medical use. This material is specifically engineered to return to its original shape after use. While foam does have a shorter lifespan than solid gel, our hybrid construction typically provides a clinical service life of 3 to 5 years with proper care.

Absolutely. Our surgical gel foam is radiolucent, meaning it does not interfere with medical imaging. This is a critical feature for orthopedic, cardiovascular, and spinal surgeries where real-time fluoroscopy is required for accuracy.

The primary benefits are weight and support. Hybrid pads are much lighter, reducing the physical strain on OR staff. Additionally, the foam base provides better “anti-bottoming” support for bariatric patients or for procedures that require more rigid positioning than a soft gel pad can provide.
