Cushioning is about surface comfort and soft touch. Shock absorption is about “Energy Management.” A shock-absorbent foam must be dense enough to stop a heavy object from hitting the ground but elastic enough to slow it down gradually.

Density is measured in $kg/m^3$. For heavy items, you need a higher density foam ($45–100\text{ kg/m}^3$) to prevent the weight from fully compressing the foam (bottoming out). For lightweight items, a lower density ($20–30\text{ kg/m}^3$) allows the foam to actually “give” enough to absorb the energy.

It depends on the material. Non-cross-linked PE foam is excellent for single-trip shipping. However, for sports gear or reusable cases, we recommend EVA or Cross-Linked PE (XLPE), as these materials have “shape memory” and can withstand repeated impacts without losing their damping capability.
